I met Dick at a Florida Native Plant Society meeting many years ago. He signed my book for me. He was exactly what I expected him to be. A real interesting guy.

Everyone in Florida should know how to get some "swamp cabbage".  I never found it in a book though.

There was a meet and greet with some folks from another forum, survivalistboards.com, and he gave us a walk and talk in the woods. He did a great job, showing us powerful poisons and good eats! Mass starvation will only happen to the uninformed. There are thousands of tons of vegetarian food out in the wild. People in Africa starve sitting next to a river full of fish! Go figure!
This guy (green Deane) has awesome videos to watch. We can feed ourselves in allmost any conditions. Eat the Weeds.

Just got back from the Big Cypress Indian reservation and learned about a ton of different plants and their uses, great area to utilize for local flora and expanding knowledge base.

I have a link on my website under the survival seeds section for "Of the Field" http://ofthefield.com/ (http://ofthefield.com/) Linda Runyon can show you everything you can eat, use as medicine provided by mother nature!

I myself prefer natural cures than any "big pharma" solution ANY DAY!

After 17 years in Fl.   I ate my first coconut ....    Truth picks it up off the ground, cracks it open and says here dig in... MMMM.

I thought coconuts came from a plastic bag...  I cracked open one on my own today at the park and had a little snack again. Been kicking those things around for years and never made the connection..  What a valuable discovery for me. I am so excited about this.

Am working up my nerve to try the liquid inside if I haven't dropped dead from some cocogerm by then from what I ate today..    Thanks Truth..

My old stomping grounds were down in Broward County. We used to eat a few cocnuts ourselves, as long as they aren't cracked. If they are the "meat" can be tainted. The "milk" is kinda nasty, like a really thin milk, but I was cautioned to boil it first, like purifying water. Don't really care for coconuts, myself, but it can provide some nourishment. If you are at the other end of the county, in the Everglades, pull up some sawgrass (carefully, they call it sawgrass for a reason) and cut off the pale portion just above the roots and below the "saw blades" of green, and boil it. It's a tasteless cabbage-type food that will help you survive. No fire and water? eat it raw and hold your nose. Also, look for wild sugar cane, very tasty. Dang, I miss it down there sometimes.

Rocky were making you coconut jelly and coconut milk this week.  Went sugar cane hunting today out west.  Gonna make you a dinner of exotic foods for you.   My goal this year is to expand my foraging knowledge one plant a week.  That's going to be my perspective this year for survival I'm going Indian style don't worry I won't run around with feathers in my hair.

Anyone ever eat a saw palmetto heart?

They taste.... OK. A little bitter but hey we are talking survival here.

I have tons of these in the back yard. "Harvesting" the hearts kills the plant but the population of them in FL is ridiculous anyways.

Be careful eating swamp cabbage as the cabbage palm is a protected plant and is only allowed to be eaten under survival situations (not practice). The saw palmetto is not protected.

If you live in Florida and have some free time give a Saw Palmetto heart a try. Combine it with some Pine needle tea for some added vitamine C.

Dear Rocky Road
I can not believe what you said in the 1960s my mother had us kids collect
them so we had extra food on the table she dreamed up some amazing treats
it was so odd we also went up 27 to the sugar cane feilds to even to the factory it self
us kids would clean up the yard one Saturday per month and we got 25lbs of brown or
white sugar At the end of the day there was a bag thrown off the truck and the guys
would say "damaged bag" but there was not a hole anywhere on the bag
we also pick Key limes and made pies florida has a black berry that grows
near and under the bridges around Florida City if mix them Stawberrys that are
around  312 Street Leisure City you have a nice mix fruit for pies or in a cold glass
