Has anybody used a biosand filtration system to clean rain water for drinking? I'm thinking of using a rain barrel that runs the overflow into a biosand system. I found some plans at
http://www.shared-source-initiative.com/biosand_filter/biosand.html
This place in Canada sells a system to and has some info

Just wanted to get peoples experience that have built there own biosand system and any tips on putting one togather. I'm thinking of experimenting with it next month.

That looks like a good system to use for pretreating your run off water but I still run it through a ceramic filter befor drinking just to be sure you got all the bugs.

I was thinking of running the water through a filter before it goes through the system and then run it through a Katadyn Drip Gravidyn to make sure I have it as clean as possiable and tasting good.

I remember my dad taking us to the middle of no where in Canada (I used to live in Seattle) and drinking dirty creek water and only eating what we could catch in the lake. That water didn't do any harm. I don't think I would want to do that for the long term though and I'm not sure what is in the Florida water.

Now your talking! That's the filter that we have and I love it! I was sceptical of to Big Berkly not being 100% stainless and too the Katadyn was cheaper. Wink

That's good info... Never used it myself, but definitely worth thinking about especially for us city folk...

Gotta let us know how the experiment turns out, definitely interested in it...

What's in the Florida water is pesticide runoff from the golf courses, phosphates from mining, fungus, amoebas, larva, bacteria, seepage from landfills, fecal seepage from the water treatment plants and alpha emitters (radioactives).
Ahhh, cool and refreshing!
