How do some of you carry your ccw while hiking? A day pack is no problem but an extended trip pack with a hip belt is for me. Any other options out there? The ccw needs to be accessible.

this only worked because of the recent weather we had but i wore insulated coveralls past few weekends.

had a standard belt holster on my belt and coveralls over that.  there are pocket holes in coveralls to get to your inside pockets.

seemed to work fine with a glock 22.

this was on another failed hunting day trip, so i wasnt really tryign to cc, it just worked out that way because of weather.

(now that your winter problem is solved what will you do for summer...coveralls are not it) Smiley

I seem to be able to carry a 1911 fine with a day pack or any pack that has no hip belt.  However, I can not carry the same way with a heavy pack that requires that I use a hip belt and transfer the weight to my waist. BTW with all this cold weather I got to experiment with a lot of different ways to carry.  I forgot what kind of disadvantage us Florida boys have during the summer time Grin  I have looked at the option of a shoulder holster but with no over shirt that is out.  I'd (for once) like to avoid buying another gun at this time. I would suggest you find a pouch just large enough to fit your favorite piece . A velcro or clip opening is the best, mount it sideways on the loops most packs have on the shoulder straps. The inside of the pouch can be covered on one side with the 'loop' material from velcro. The 'hook' velcro material can be put on an inexpensive nylon holster which will cling to the inside of the pouch. A velcro retention strap can be fitted if desired. This works best with a more compact firearm (J-frame revolver, mini Glock, etc.). With the pouch fitted just above the waist belt on a backpack a natural draw can be achieved. The weapon stays out of sight, can be camoed as a firstaid pouch if desired, and is still readily accessible. I find most of this type of question will have a custom/homemade solution. If you can't sew most dry cleaners have this service and can provid the needed service. Hope this helps.

On my large kelty packs I use the Tactical tailor Lunar CC pouch. It uses MALICE clips which fit perfect on my hip belt. Great for hiking!

fwiw there are several tactical places like already posted and a ton of backpacking companies that make pouches/bags that fit on your mid section so hikers can have "camera's" etc at hands reach.
for one example-
http://www.theomm.com/products/packs/TrioChestPouch.html

or you can just hump a fag bag and spend $80  on a tactical murse to try justify it Tongue but they wont work well with a full size pack if your doing more than some little stroll down through the county park as a day hike.

Good solutions. I've switched to pocket carry full-time now.  I usually wear baggy cargo shorts every day, so I got a Ruger SR-9c and an Uncle Mikes pocket holster and there's only one pair of shorts that the butt of the handle isn't totally concealed.  I'm going to have my wife extend the pocket on those shorts pretty soon.

I feel very comfortable with pocket carry.  I do have to wear a belt though, otherwise my shorts sag too much.
