Question:

Do You believe that Florida is generally easier to naviagate through than other States that are
more rural, less-developed and have greater variations in topographic-elevations?

With a solidly-constructed and durable magnetic compass, even a single person in a
cypress swamp head should be able get his/her bearing on which direction-of-travel should
be able to lead them to safety of civilization.

It would seem so to me. I think the biggest danger for most folks is the swamp. ::

Aw...c'mon, I'm not THAT dangerous!
Really, I got lost in the swamp once, and I just used dead reckoning to find my way back to the Florida Trail. But I should have had a compas with me. I carry one now.

Nice thing about getting lost in sunny Florida is, if you can hold a straight line, it's never too far to find some form of 'civilization'........  no real 'wilderness' here.
Even "Tate's Hell" is positively tame these days.  Just watch for snakes......    Wink

You've never been to oceans edge at the 10,000 Islands, have you?  Wink

I think the flat land here is a navigational advantage over the mountainous terrain I am used to.

I think the flat land here is a navigational advantage over the mountainous terrain I am used to.

i can step off a road in middle  Ontario and walk without issue 90% of the time.
i can step off a road here and have to fight my way through the 1st 10 feet, before i start cussing.

i have had this debate with folks while on our hikes and said " ok the camp site is xx miles, on this reading....start walking...." they have yet to take me up on it Wink

terrian is AO dependent. I love to walk in the oak hammocks down here...i hate walking in sandhill scrub....walking in wide open pine flats is a breeze.....problem is florida has all of them and in some AOs it can go from swamp to scrub, back to swamp, to hammock, to pine flats in less than 5 miles.

It's harder to triangulate where you are I think in Florida. You'd have to do a lot of navigating around things, but in general it's probably easier to walk a straight line if you can get through the wildlife.

Granted the underbrush can be a bear to deal with, and walking in 'sugar sand' - "faggitaboutit!"
The swamp doesn't bother me a bit - I grew up in it.  Just mind the gators.....  they ALWAYS have right-of-way!    Azn

From reading this, it seems to me people are confusing navigation and travel.  Florida is easy to travel, difficult to navigate.  With a lack of geographic features your only option (most the time) is dead reckoning.  If you have to find a point to meet people 25 miles of land foot travel away, it is very easy here to miss them.
