I've always been big on self-sufficiency, but I got serious after Katrina.  Seeing how FAST society breaks down when just the little things people have come to EXPECT go off-line.  A few days of no electricity, no cable, no water and people are off the reservation.  Start imagining the same situation, but wide spread.  Imagine not one city, or a half dozen, but hundreds of major and minor cities coming unglued.  What would it take not to be a victim (in all of it's permutations)?

OK, I'll admit; I was one of those Y2K awakened ones...

Being in Los Angeles, Dad being in the Army, living in a poor neighborhood about that same timing, an ex girlfriend was watching a peak oil show... I could care less about the peak oil part, but the power out, people in a rage and fighting for survival; it dawned on me, what the hell was I going to do if the computers & power went out? Two months before Y2K, I was one of the ones that blew like $600 for canned food, pasta stuff and all kinds of stuff that would not last to long... Now, being there, guns was the easy part, but didn't have the ammo, so blew like $300 on ammo to get out of the city when ready...

Y2K never happened, so I relaxed for a bit, then got a head notion that I would run for the hills and survive off the land when something does happen... Did a crap load of hiking, switch backs, week adventures off into the farthest places I could get to... Actually learned a lot there, from failing at what I read, then trying it again and again till it worked... My thought then was travel light, quick & effective like most survivalist I guess; live off the land and get to a BOL quickly by foot.

5 years ago, when my first son was born, the whole plan in my head changed... I'm never going to BO quickly by foot with a wife & new born, and I'm not going to be living off the land for myself anymore... I see and know a lot of folks that train and act like they are ready to hit the hills, but have the wife & kids at home on their weekend warrior get away, I just can't do that either, leave them behind... So, 3 kids later, my whole outlook has changed to the strategies I plan for...

My plans might be family & friend geared now, but it sure wasn't when I got into it... I went through many stages in order to get real on what will be... Let's see; what stages did I go through?

I was going to be Neo, a gun, a sword and trench coat and fight my way out of Los Angeles;

I was going to be shopping cart pusher, carry my food out

I was going to be Rambo and run for the hills and live off the land with a knife

I was going to be a woodsman & live off the land with a back pack full of essentials

Now, just a simple prepper looking to protect & provide for the family when the SHTF... Most plans are long term and in a group setting; one thing I learned through my whole skipping through the internet stage was that you will die alone when the masses rise and start sweeping the areas for resources in large groups... Kind of like a locust swarp....

Wow, that was a little rant there... LOL

Working in IT at the time, and seeing the work that had been done nationwide since around '96, I knew the old "Computers crashing and bringing civilization DOWN!" thing was way overblown.  BUT.....  'what if'.....  so yeah, I had my preps.  Still have some of the dry packaged food from back then - it'll be my 'give-away' stuff for the first few refugees after TSHTF.......   Azn

I am too old and fat now to be entertaining ideas of hiking the swamps with a backpack and a Rambo knife.  I'll hold out here at Casa Dawg til the MZBs come enmasse - take a few out then hit The Button.  They won't get my stuff.......

Doesn't seem so overblown now.

Except in comparison to the damage that an atmospheric nuke detonation 300 miles up can do.  Shocked

Being in banking woke me up big time!!  I guess I am leaning toward a financial collapse.  All the gov checks coming across the counters....mostly disability, to people who seemed quite capable of work.  Driving their Escalades and Hummers.... and having a safe box in the vault, where they would put wads of cash.  When I saw young 20 somethings trying to make a 1500.00 mortgage payment, I knew we were screwed.  I am in my mid 40's and could have never qualified for a mortgage in that amount.  The money will run out...and those that rely on gov will be sorely disappointed, as will the ones that hold material things in high esteem.   I just wish I could have some chickens...; )
