Semi-Auto in 7.62x54R
« on: November 02, 2012, 03:58:55 PM »
A question:
For years my "heavy hitter" was an M44 Mosin Nagant.  Reliable, powerful and way more accurate than I am.  But I've been wondering if I should be investigating a semi-auto in the same caliber.  Ammo is cheap (relatively) and plentiful.  I'll never sell my M44, but a semi in the same caliber seems like a really good idea.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Not a lot to choose from in the semi-auto dept when it comes to 7.62x54. The bigger issue would be the use of corrosive ammo in a semi. Not a lot of non-corrosive out there... some, but youll pay for it!
BTW... I have a thing for rimmed cartridges and 7.62x54 is one of my favorites!

Im in agreement with native. You are kind of limited on choices. If you wanna stay with the 54r your best bet would be a dragunov rifle. Youd be blessed to afford let alone find one since they are kind of rare and with a base price tag usually being up to $10,000 and up you could do a total change and prob come out with an even better setup for cheaper. VEPR makes a good rifle but they are around $800 or more new. You can pick up a romanian PSLfor around $500 usually. You should only shoot the lighter 54r rounds through the PSL because of how its designed. Shouldnt be a problem since most of the surplus is the lighter stuff now. Im not sure but does Winchester have a modern 54r load?

Check out Vepr, very nice rifles made from AK style rifles. A lot of positive feedback about the VEPR's, looks like they are worth the cash. Lots of aftermarket stuff for it. Heck I know it's my immediate next rifle.

Excellent suggestions.  Maybe Santa will put one under our tree.  I'll leave out the good cookies for him.
