Rich Romans used goose feathers - but most just walked around smelling like an overloaded litter box.
Until they went to a public bath and soaked the dried fudge off - and swam around in each other's M&M's.

Someday the TP will run out and books will become TP - until the books are gone.

I keep a box of the cheapest washcloths I could buy.  You use one and toss it in a lidded container.  On a regular schedule the cloths are boiled - this kills any bacteria and loosens any heavy butter.  They may be stained but after sun drying on a line will be clean enough for reuse.

For you Jeremiah Johnsons there is 3-Way TP.
1. first wipe, fold in half
2. deuce two, fold in quarters
3. boil the nasty thing

Better your pack smells like a litter box than your body.

Time to think outside the box.

This fits into a standard water bottle. Fill with warm water, aim, squeeze, then dry. Nice and simple. Nothing to stock up on, and it keeps things nice and clean. Don't under-estimate the problems - serious problems - that can develop from poor personal hygiene. Here's the Amazon link - http://www.amazon.com/Hygienna-Solo/dp/B00CDPCHLU/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1423278128&sr=8-7&keywords=portable+bidet+sprayer (http://www.amazon.com/Hygienna-Solo/dp/B00CDPCHLU/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1423278128&sr=8-7&keywords=portable+bidet+sprayer).

Yes, I have one. Several, actually.

284?
I have a ways to get there. I might get close to a hundred rolls of True T-P paper. Then I might use the 20ish mega paper towel rolls I have left. Sams sells a pack of 15 mega rolls, try getting a pack when I make it there the 15 mega roll pack says they equal 30rolls but IDNK.
FYI seen a rain barrel at tractor supply that holds a supposed 50gallons of rain water, I just thought of it it has a spigot at the bottom. Maybe a hose, turn on the spigot an rinse off for months... or fill a water can an rinse off butter bottom. Think if mounted could be a outside shower option..

: Re: Toilet Paper
: Sentry February 26, 2015, 09:03:24 PM
Heres my math on this and it's using 6 sheets per wipe.

Toilet paper
One roll of toilet paper has 374 sheets
Which allows for 62 uses
62 uses divided by three uses daily equals 20 days
20 days goes into 365 days at 18 rolls per year

18 rolls times four persons equals 73 rolls per year
73 rolls X five years equals 365 rolls

I'd like to see Kleenex being cheaper... Not sure how you are coming to this conclusion... I cannot see it being cheaper. I just looked on Amazon (I know you can get stuff cheap) and there is a hell of a difference in price...

TP is just as usable as Kleenex

Check out the women's section at survivalist boards. Try searching for "family cloth." If you're a dude, you can't post but you can read (the guys tend to really muck up the threads).  Lots of info about using & cleaning the cloth wipes as well as using different types of spray/squirt containers before the wiping process, which apparently really cuts down on the pooh.
: Re: Toilet Paper
: siege571 February 27, 2015, 12:29:22 AM
I see storing mountains of TP as being like storing a mountain of tampons. You don't need to spend all the money and waste all the space on either one. And if you're bugging out or just on the road with a limited amount of space, you've got more important things to carry.

Instead of TP use family cloth and squirt bottles.
Instead of tampons use a menstrual cup (e.g., Diva Cup). There are also plenty of patterns on line to sew reusable sanitary pads.

Part of my back up plan includes the paper napkins.  My wife is a chronic yard sale shopper.  Since we have a high concentration of military in the area, their pre-moving yard sales include all kinds of things.  Paper products are very common as they clean out their kitchen.  One time she came home with about 5 large packages of high quality napkins.  I vac-packed them in 300 count packages.  They vac-pack down to a very small package.  They would make great TP substitutes.  Can't be flushed, but a small burn barrel solves the problem.  Modern TP is a technology marvel, but it is not multi-use.  Napkins have a thousand uses; cleaning, hand drying, even an emergency bandage.  The better ones can even be used as a pre-filter for water to remove the gunk.
: Re: Toilet Paper
: Bumbury March 03, 2015, 09:41:36 AM
seige those are good ideas.. i do think most ladies have a better plan for backups on these issues... so any links would much be appreciated...

Sentry.. i do get at sams 6 lager boxes of kleenex which are larger sheets than the TP for around 10.00 and the average 12 count tp is running around 8 to 13 depending brand and has less total sq foot of paper...

Interesting thread!

I buy bulk from BJ's for my short term shtf TP needs, as much as I can store, its a commodity which will always be used.

Ive always been fastenated with making paper but never tried. I've seen shows showing how the Chinese have been doing it for thousands of years, fastenating. Never really thought about doing it for a shtf scenario. The person who can make TP would be king in TEOTWAWKI scenario!

You just make highly saturated pureed paper water solution then screen it out in sheets. It takes a huge degree of skill to get the thickness and consistancy right. Plant pulp was used

Many times I have taken newspaper/magazines, crumpled it soft and used that. Bet the majority of sheeple wouldnt even think of doing that!

Makes storing Clorox even more important for disinfecting our rags or maybe even dying the paper we make.

Luckily, in FL we have better water options for washing rags.

Just my $0.02 rambling thoughts on TP  :)

Hey Tox--in the downloads section here you can find a document on storing and making bleach. I saw you mention Clorox (and that you are new here) so I'm not sure if you're aware that regular off-the-shelf liquid bleach retains its full effectiveness for only about 6-12 months. I think I posted a document there. Oh yes--now I remember--I did post one there--I also included info for disinfecting wells. Because you never know when a zombie might fall in.

Buying my Toilet Paper packs cost 6.59 I get 12 rolls of 374 sheets totaling 4488 sheets.
I'll say I use 16 sheets a day. Giving me 280 days worth of TP

Napkins
Purchase 1 pack at 3.49 for 500 sheets.
We'll say 1 napkin per use for arguments sake. (Someone need to test this) Well use 4 sheets per day.
Giving us 125 days worth of Napkins.

Double that to get us closer, 250 days. Id have to pay $6.58 for two packs I pay 1 cent more for 30 more days.

Kleenex
If I buy the Sale Price of kleenex I get 800 sheets for $5.00.
Well say maybe we can get away with 1 tissue per use.  Again 4 sheets per day.
That's 200 days worth of tissue.

If we add another box for maybe a 1.30? That's another 200, and closer to the cost of my TP. Giving us 1000 sheets. That's still only 250 days worth of use.

In the end (pardon the pun) my tushy will be cleaner for 30 more days than yours. And I may have paid 20 cents more than you.

The numbers I use for use are based on going 4 times per day using 4 sheets of toilet paper per use.

I can understand the need for multi use when it comes to certain items...

How many uses does a Kleenex have. Sure you can wipe up a small mess. You cant get it wet and use it, it will fall apart.

Im sure you already have rags in the house. Use those.

Hell we were using paper towels for the first 6-7 years in our house. I started thinking about it one day. I was wasting money using them to do everything that I used to use rags for... Now I just buy different types of rags, they are reusable and even the cheap dish rags will allow more uses before they fall apart.

Wow.  Six sheets per wipe?  Maybe I'm some kind of freak of nature, but I use a heck of a lot more than six sheets.  Of course, I use the single-ply Scott's (1000 sheets per roll) and fold it over... and over... and over, because I will tell you this, my friends, nothing is worse than a "bust through"!    :-[

I guess I could count sheets, but what I did to figure out how long a roll would last was simply to see how many days it would last before I had to replace it.  Of course, I had to take into account that I was not always at home when nature called.  I did the same with a lot of consumables like soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc.  What I came up with was that our family (six living at home at that time) used 91 rolls of single-ply Scott's per year.  Right now I'm sitting on (no pun intended) about 200 rolls, so I'll be sitting pretty when the S hits the F.  Still, I intend to buy more.

Can you have too much toilet paper?  No way!  Toilet paper will be a great barter item.  Besides, it's cheap and easy to store.  Why would you not have lots of toilet paper?  The old-timers on this forum will remember a discussion about alternatives to toilet paper.  Someone suggested coffee filters.  My point then, and still is today, why would you use coffee filters?  They cost a lot more than toilet paper, and are not as effective.  Instead of stockpiling coffee filters to use as toilet paper, why not just stockpile TP?

Sentry and EX all good points and good math... too..  im like EX when it comes to usage i have 2 women that are in the house so 1 roll lasts about 3 days if we are lucky... i do have TP stashed away along with the napkins and even news papers in case i have to...  ^-^ well really the news papers are for soaking in water and tying together to make fire logs but i figure just in case... like everything else back to the drawing board uggg......
