I do not wish to come across as a jerk. Or worse. Please hear me out.
As an old soldier, a war vet whose unit suffered 444 KIA in Vietnam, please, it is not appropriate to wish ANY veteran a Happy Memorial Day.

And on the same subject:
Armed Forces Day celebrates those currently serving.
Veterans Day celebrates those who have served.
Memorial Day honors those who died in service to America.

Thank you, and please do not take offense.

I think we all come from a similar place. Our experiences in the military bring us to a like minded place.

ImO it should not be just a day.
The Army was said to have formed in 1775, around 200 & say 50 years. A lot of veterans lived, died, sacrificed. Most people seem to not give 2cents to all who serve unless a day is marked on a freaking calender or the get time off. Its sad an pathetic the lack of support the rest of the year. I have told ww2 & Korea veterans thanks for there service to the country and heard not just thanks but I have heard I dont remember to many times I been told that, or wish more felt like that.
An many younger than me dont think twice about our veterans.

Here in our small town we put out white crosses with the Veterans name and branch of service and what war they fought in then place a small U.S. flag. There is a small parade with veterans who want to march or ride on a decorated hay wagon. Afterwards, the community comes together at the town park where there is a cook out and taps gets played. Many thanks are given to our older vets and we younger ones listen to the various stories that are told. Some of the church's open for those who want "quiet time" with their loved ones and friends.

I agree to a point. I do see more public support. Maybe not individuals....
I remember back in the 70's. We were all baby killers I remember in the 80's I was at Greenham Common in England. We were told at the end of the day where we would all meet in the morning. Our cars were guarded, We all rode buses to the base, thru the gates. The Women of the peace movement were camped out front of the base, for months That are the times I remember.
Not causing trouble. Just saying, there is support for the troops. I support the troops, always have.

It makes me feel good to surprise some older veterans. I have a lean wallet, who dont. An I see there hat or pin, a patch. Some shone WW2, Korea, Vietnam... An I pay for there meal at the restaurant im visiting. Sometimes the waitress will say something when there tickets due, an I see there reaction.
As mentioned earlier, public supporters on certain days, mostly with holidays involved. Not much individual support imo. But there is distrust with the federal government (including soldiers, local police). An Sometimes imo they listened to the officers an not trust us by "blending in". .  July 4th is over. Where has been the support? The patriotic music? The numerous flags? The "love of county an fellow man"?

I was too young for Vietnam and to old for other conflicts the U.S. was involved in.  God bless all that have given all, served in the past or current.  My prayers to and four the four Marines and their families and service members who worked with them, who died in Chattanooga.  Today, I wrote my congressman and senator for my district and state, asking them to repeal a 1992 law that prohibited service members from being armed at work.  A lot of things have changed in the U.S.A. since that law was instituted in 1992.  The threats are much greater.  The bad guys show up and it's like they are hunting in a baited field.  One state senator here in Tennessee will submit a bill to repeal the 1992 law on Monday.  Obama brags of having a pen, he needs to use it as soon as the bill is pass by both house and senate.
