: Fear the Walking Dead
: Toxoph September 21, 2015, 12:58:37 PM
*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

Anyone watching "Fear the Walking Dead"? I'm a huge fan of "The Walking Dead" but I find this spinoff facinating as it deals with the initial scenario of an apocalyptic event. I love seeing how the masses are portrayed as this plays out and the role of the government. I find many things "spot on", like the how the majority rely on our government to save us and what the military motives actually are which is basically population and information containment.

Anyways, curious how others felt.

I'm in so far. I think they have hit it spot on. I know one very strong thought I had watching the last episode was little miss thing needs to stop with the short skirts. Not that I buy into the "she was asking to be raped" BS. But, you dangle bait and fish bite.
Now the question is, what would you have done differently? What would you be doing now?
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead
: Capt Nat September 22, 2015, 07:56:40 AM
At this point, I think it's hard to assess where the greatest danger versus safety lies.  On one hand, the military has created a zone safe from zombies at least for now but, at what point does the order come down to "eliminate" the neighborhood population so as to consolidate their resources.

At this point, I'm almost as afraid of the military as I am the zombies.  I would be formulating an escape/evasion plan.  They need weapons, equipment, and supplies.  I would try to make my exit in such a way that the military wouldn't bother to pursue and reel me back in.  I would want them to think me not important enough to waste resources on.

The signal from the house on the hill would be a definite start...
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead
: Florida Cracker September 22, 2015, 11:32:24 AM
Capt. I'd say that's a fair evaluation of the situation. My thinking is; 1) gather supplies and a way to carry them. 2) Get out of the control of others.
Once out I have 2 initial destinations in mind. The house on the hill, and possibly the fat kids house. After that away from the city. The desert is a hard place to survive so I would head north, then east moving to southeast. Looking for a place to set up a long term homestead.
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead
: KODIAK September 22, 2015, 12:56:34 PM
I think the signal from the hill has been dispatched. That looked like muzzle flash, not signals on the last show.
Plan: You are right, gather supplies, head out.
Wounded and trouble makers are disappearing. Don't think they will be seen again..... They are being "helped" somewhere else...
They need to start getting a clue, fast.

Im not sure thats a good place after what Travis saw at the end of the last episode, The concensus is the the military went there after the tip there was someone there and they eliminated them, that was the shots he heard and the muzzle flashes, just a theory for now but falls in line with the military trying to control the situation.

I agree, I would be readying my bug-out-vehicle and supplies, even ready to hoof it. Though no one can imagine a potential herd (like seen in Walking Dead) could be on the way, I'd be ready to bolt given the chance and a herd may be what brings down the compound.

Either way, from L.A. there arent many good options for fleeing to. As stated, the desert is harsh, I dont see south as being good, north or east is far but only real options.

I always wondered if Zombies freeze?

The house on the hill is definitely out. I watch with closed caption so I don't wake my son: It was "distant gunfire" as the house lit up.  My question would be why?  Sadly I can also think of a lot of bad answers that are all to real.

The dad drives me nuts. He sees what's going on, then gets mad about the old guy showing his son how to use a gun: "you know how I feel about guns". Gotta love California. I cant wait to see him change his liberal tune.
I hope smart blond mom picked up that pistol in the road.

Interesting concepts. I like to see how they imagine the collapse would be.  I can certainly see why so many would stay with the army for the perception of protection and food.  In the show they talked about the army feeding everyone, and people coming to the trucks for cases of food.  Later in the backyard by the pool was a tangerine tree loaded with ripe fruit. hmmm

I never got into The Walking Dead.  I got too far behind and couldn't catch up.  Besides, I tend to avoid overhyped TV shows.  However, I am really digging Fear the Walking Dead.  So much so, in fact, that I will go back and watch the original series once this one finishes.

This week's episode angered me.  That military commander is such a douche!  And yeah, the gubment... yeah.

My  favorite lines from "Fear" so  far.
"When civilization ends it ends fast", "If it happens it will happen quickly, and you must be prepared."
& "Good people are the first ones to die."
Just as there is a big difference between a philosophy and a bumper sticker, there is a big difference between a life plan and a T. V. show. But if you listen you can pick out bits of truth.

Sundays episode was interesting, overall theme, dont trust the government! I think Travis will have his "moment" where he realizes the world he holds his current values in is gone. Madison is already on that path. One episode to go then TWD season premier. My lesson? dont evac to a stadium! but then I already knew that even before Katrina reinforced that!

Some of the troops seem to be deserting......
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead
: Florida Cracker September 29, 2015, 12:22:23 PM
FWIW, I think the idea of some of the troops deserting is an accurate portrayal of how it would be. Some troops no matter what, no matter the situation will hold strong to the brothers in arms, mission first mind set. Others will cut and run for home. I actually expect in a full on holly crap, EOTWAWKI, situation to see four primary factions arise. The two mentioned above plus the blind followers. Those that will follow there strongest loyalty. In the same way that General Lee (not say'n he was a follower. It's just an example.) turned down the command of the Union Army because his higher loyalty was to the people and state of Virginia. They may feel more loyalty to the people of there state, to a particular Sergeant, to God, or to a battle buddy they have been under fire with before. Then the fourth group, those who will stand and serve, not committed to the gooberment but to the oath they took. They will support and defend the Constitution.
The scary part is there is no way of knowing what group will be the biggest.

I love this show. We have watched since day one. Not sure if the characters will be strong enough to do what needs to, but I am all in to see it.

I haven't watched the walking dead, is that the same as this one?
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead

RFD, it is based on the same event. Fear is covering the beginning of the scenario, when the infection first hit. WD mostly skipped this. Another big difference is while Fear is set in L. A. the original series is set in America.  uuuj Originally Georgia and now Virginia. Being season I think 6 now Walking Dead is a year or 2 ahead. If you can, I believe it is on "NetFlix" so it is possible to get up to date. Enjoy.

Its only kinda slow because we know what's going on. They don't have all the info.  We would be the same in that scenario. Its like the discussion we have had before on how do you know when its all going bad?  Power goes out, so you immediately kill anyone on your land?  It would take a while (or a major personal event) to realize that society has completely disintegrated.
These characters still think the gov is going to get it under control, that rule of law is still in effect.  That wont last long, but I find it interesting to watch the transition.

On a side note, I watched some of season one of Walking Dead. Wow they were so young and clean.

: Toxoph October 05, 2015, 08:18:24 AM
interesting episode, the season finale, a little underwhelming but still worth watching. Travis is starting to realize the situation and the military should now understand the magnitude of the situation. Finally got to see a "Herd"

Seem theres a prepper in the group! well, more so than the others, at least the well dressed, old spice guy (stolen description) has a plan and seems he was more forward thinking than the others. He understood and seems to have pre-thought out routes to get back home and has a plan to escape.

At least TWD premier starts next week.

I'm a big TWD fan and I was a little skeptical about Fear. I just watched the Pilot and it looks like it's going to be interesting and pretty decent. I don't have cable, so I'm not able to watch the others.

My wife wants the walkers/infected to get him..... I think he will be around for a while.
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead
: Alas Babylon October 06, 2015, 08:30:22 AM
I did not mean to imply we would be sheeple. I meant that without information, it may take some time to make the jump to the world has ended. How do you know when its time to run?
When the first person has top be shot in the head to die? When the power goes out? When the national guard takes over?
For these tv people, they are not as "aware" as we might be.  This forum would probably have already made some conclusions and taken action.  Realistically I bet even a lot of preppers would be slow to bug out without a clear indication that rule of law is gone.

i watched sunday and i dont get it. how long do they think they can survive on a boat in the middle of the water? the plot felt like they were just getting on the boat, resources would run out right?
: Re: Fear the Walking Dead
: Capt Nat October 07, 2015, 07:25:52 PM
A boat that size would have a water maker for converting sea water and would work until diesel fuel ran out.  Besides stored food, they may be successful fishing, etc.  Security wise it would be easy to defend and mobile so they could travel to maybe an unaffected area.

On the down side, with the world going down, weather forecasting will become a thing of the past and will become their greatest danger.  They are quite likely to encounter hostility everywhere they attempt to land.  And they will run out of fuel and then they are trapped...

These are just some of the thoughts and ramblings of a crazy old sailor...

As your new to Walking Dead, you have not yet learned the prime directive to the show.  Don't get attached to any character, as they will no doubt die.  No one is safe.

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER  ---IF YOU PLAN TO WATCH THE OLD ONES - don't read this list of main characters killed off!!!

There have been 252 deaths so far, here are a few main characters:

For reference, watch the old shows - Amy, Jim, Sophia, Otis, Dale,  Most people on the farm, T-Dog, Lori, Andrea, lizzie and Mika, Bob, Beth, Tyreese, Noah.

Its sad, but that's one thing that makes this show so real.
