Got some fresh air and working on getting my conditioning back. I went on a volunteer led walk at a state park then hiked a short trail solo. Used to be not to long ago I'd do 15 miles and barely notice it. I've got to keep it up as I signed up for a 5 mile  off trail hike later this month. Baby steps. I did win a book today from the park. It's the Field Guide to Florida from the National Audubon Society. So far I like it. I enjoyed looking up plants and the few critters I saw. There was one water snake I haven't identified yet.

It was time to start using up some of the canned berries before they come into season again. Any calories I burned today were put right back on by way of  blackberry cobbler. Some of the juice is now syrup for tomorrows pancakes. The rest of the juice I'll turn into a shrub tomorrow.

I moved a gate on my fence.   Will be removing a section of fence between my house and the neighbor.   We decided to make a gravel pad there for parking.    This helps me with parking and working on the Jeep.   It also gives me room for a trailer which I didnt have room for before.

I need the trailer for my disaster plans.

I finally made it to storm spotter class and what great timing. I enjoyed the class. There wasn't a written test or certificate presented. We did have to sign in so perhaps it's sent to our team leaders to distribute? Either way with the front coming through yesterday I was looking up into the clouds to practice...until nightfall that is.  I received multiple emergency tornado warnings so I had a mini drill and all worked out as it should have.

Blessed the house for the Epiphany. Reorganized a pantry. It has more space now and made note of items nearing shelf life to work into the meal plan over the next couple of weeks.

Finished dental work today :) After the meds wore off my neighbor brought me to an estate sale on the way home. I didn't do too bad. I picked up  4 100% wool blankets for $6, a new steamer basket .50, a large  box filled with 4x4 gauze and gauze rolls for $2

While it wasn't today, I recently picked up a new BOV
2012 Chevy Silverado 2500HD
Granted it's not deisel, it's gas which I didn't know they made them in gas motors. But I solved two problems for me.
Cargo capacity and 4X4
Bonus's are
Hauling and crew cab.
For whatever reason I felt this was the truck. I am very happy with it thus far as far upgrades it has and what I can do with it in the future.

This week I will be starting some vegetable seeds for the spring planting season. I'm amazed that my Tabasco peppers, jalapeno, and banana peppers have been growing through all this crazy weather we've had so far this winter.
: Re: What did you do to prep today? 2017
: cook January 18, 2017, 09:04:43 AM
Are they in the ground,or just in a sprouting container?
Mine went into the ground a few weeks ago and are doing fine.In fact I'm having to pull up some every few days because I planted a lot thinking they wouldn't grow,so they are overcrowded.

Had 4 out of six eggs hatch 4 days ago,1 chick died from what I think is "pasty butt",but others look great..now gotta figure out what sex they are. O0

Today I'm taking the van in for an oil change. We'll see what else they come up with to try and scare me into paying more. I'm going out on my first off trail hike this week and rain is expected so I'll be going through the pack. Trying to decide between a poncho or rain jacket and hat and pairing down the rest of the pack. It's only 5 miles and along a ravine to a rock formation. I'm thinking of first aid for cuts, sprains, splinting, bug bites (it's a swampy area), water, portable ham radio, snacks. Possibly a small alcohol stove to make something hot to drink at the end if I get too wet. I'll also bring a compass and map to practice. I have a lot to learn about land navigation but fortunately I do have a really good sense of direction.

I did manage to attend a storm spotter class. Very interesting. Great timing with the storm a few days ago. Next on the list I signed up to renew my CPR/AED certification. Two years went by fast.

That's awesome!

I had a great daygetting some exercise exploring San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park. It was beautiful and well kept in the area I was in. What a pleasure to find trails that were not littered. I missed the off trail hike with a group that I was looking forward to. A semi was losing its load and traffic got held up. I was pretty bummed out about that. I really wanted to see the rock formations. I ended up going  out solo. I'm off tomorrow so I'm seeking another trail to get some more exercise. The next couple of months I'm focusing on health & estate planning. All my plans fell apart so I need to update everything.

I did a two night camp out at Myakka State Park, including a 7 mile hike while doing trail maintenance.   If anyone has been to the "outback" of Myakka, you know it can be brutal hiking those trails in the open sun.  One thing for sure, I need to get my fat arse out hiking more.  Also, I meet a potential new member, and someone who I think will be a good partner to practice survival skills.

Kinda prepping this weekend, I was with my scouts at a Camporee, perfect weather but I have done many hot summer trips. I have an 8 D cell fan that I would use, it really helps on hot nights. It lasts all weekend and a lot longer though I haven't used it more than 2 nights but the batteries are good for several trips after that. Those cooling towels are life savers too on hot trips.

Working on health and getting back into shape. I was down for a bit. I did about 5 miles yesterday and planning on 8-9 miles tomorrow. After yesterdays hike I started a batch of rumtopf and a batch of strawberry shrub mix. German's preserved fruit back in the day with rum and sugar. In colonial times one method was shrubs made with fruit, sugar, and vinegar. I enjoyed the shrubs last year. I'll find out about the other as we approach the holiday's.

Got some more exercise. I went to the ididahike FTA fund raiser. With a short side trip it was about 9.25 miles. What a fun trip that was. I did a walk around in the yard. Fixed a gutter and have decided to take out a few trees. It would open up sun to an area I could plant. Unfortunately the trees are tall 40-50 ft but they are pretty thin in diameter. I'm hoping it's something I can do myself.  If I make a mistake it won't fall on a structure so my project this week is to learn if it's safe to try and take down a tree solo and if so how.
: Re: What did you do to prep today? 2017
: Floridaclipper March 09, 2017, 10:40:13 AM
Well the trees will stay where they are for now but I'll take off some of the lower limbs. While they won't fall on a structure if I try and take them out they likely will get caught up in the other trees. I tested the radio and fixed the loose connections to the battery, tried a new recipe that could be adapted to work in a power outage, and will try and give a face lift to an old Barlow I found in a thrift shop for my project this week. I broke into the Danish Cherry sauce I put up awhile back Yum!I also secured my final resting place. Still so much to do. So much to learn.....

Have slowly been putting my seedlings outside for eventual ground planting. This year I will see how much luck I have growing crook neck squash, cucumbers, butter nut squash, and cherry tomatoes. I'm really excited right now because the blueberry bushes are loaded with green berries, and my strawberries are producing too!!

I discovered that Amazon sells mountain house foods in number 10 cans in their "open packaging warehouse", where they sell it cheaper than normal prices. I ordered 4 cans, which were delivered today.  they are supposed to be "open Box" products. Looks like each can has a small dent in it, none of them compromising the can.
I'm all up for cheaper long term foods.

Not sure if its really a prep, but a skill.Last summer I learned to operate a bobcat and a backhoe, and this year a forklift.
Its really something you have to do everyday to get good at,but I know the basics.

It's been a busy week and getting busier. This week throughout the state it's my understanding all agencies are doing their hurricane preparedness drills. I have 2 I'll be participating in. I volunteer so I'm responsible for my own supplies. Today I went through one of my bags and sourced several items I thought I may need, a new antenna is on the way, and I made my own triage tape belt. I was disgusted with the cost and options available for something so simple. Attach an official sounding name or "tactical" to any item and they seem to charge a premium for it. My version set me back approx $9.30 everything included. Last but not least I picked up a battery charger/maintainer. I keep draining a battery in a car I don't drive often enough. It's a Schumacher ssc-1500A. We'll see how it does. I have it hooked up and I'll check the car in the morning. I liked that it will automatically switch to maintain after charging so I don't have to babysit it and that it will work with standard, agm, and gel batteries.

Scored at an estate sale today.

one of those where they open the door and are selling everything in the house.  This one was being run by the grandson.  While I was in the back porch I noticed a small metal building in the cornor of the back yard all rusted out and the roof caved in.  I ask the grandson if there was anything in the back shed?  He said he didn't know but we could go look.  The first thing we saw was a 4 foot black snake and that city boy about crapped his pants.  He said if I wanted anything from that building I had to dig it out my self.  I was looking at that stack of mason jar boxes against the back wall and said I'll give you 20.00 for everything in the shed and that way you don't have to deal with the snakes.  He said deal... I handed him the money and went to pull my van around back.

22 boxes of jars.  pints, quarts and half gallons.
16 Pisces of cast iron.  dutch ovens, skillets and griddles.
2 large pressure cookers
a couple of boxes of old kitchen stuff
and other assorted treasures.  well treasures to me but to the grandson just a bunch more junk LOL.

I did my yearly generator check and gave the  chainsaw a tune-up ,made some bread with my old dry milk just to check it and got the food dryer ready for more fruit and meat drying ,my old sugar is hard as hell but sweet and the salt still salty so just need to replenish my flour, lard and water. Had to help a friend with a new solar power freezer, he has frequent power outages in his area ,big homes and lots of power demands and during heavy rain it gets cutoff somehow .Trying to teach him not to load up the refrigerator so much during this months of hurricane season and while there we found out that his generator had a gum-up carburetor so had to dismantle it and do a complete overhaul on it ,it seems that even after two years the fuel stabilizer did no good. Case in point here folks; keep a Ziploc bag with a new carb ,filter and plug next to your generator all the time that way in an emergency you don`t have to run all over town for it ,I do this with all my gas power tools .And they are never left with gas in them. And if you store a lot of gas you better have it away from the changing weather in a full air tight container, the minute air gets in it ,it`ll start to gum-up on you.

Spent last 3 days preparing. Spent better part of a day on generator maintenance, pulled off gas cap and rubber seal had disintegrated and fell into tank, had to take tank apart and clean and fashion a new gasket after a futile search for a new one. Air filter disintegrated too, again, couldnt find a replacement, wound up making one from a sponge, worked great, got it running great.

Portable AC didnt work, messed with it till it did, not sure what was the issue but working now. Finished filling gas cans, got 40 gals now, others were doing same, saw quite a few filling cans. Cleaned gutters.

Got extra chainsaw blades, I have 3 extras now. I burned through 3 during Charley so I know how valuable they can be and impossible to find post storm.

Bought extra tarps, I have plenty but no doubt friends wont have any and as in Charley where I tarped 3 roofs with friends, I may be doing the same for this one.

Ordered 2 extra batteries for my old Dewalt drill, they dont sell the 14.4v ones at Lowes anymore so bought off Amazon, will be here tomorrow. No doubt, as for Charley, I will be helping with shutter installation for friends. Bought an extra cell phone charger.

Still lots to do.

I had a generator, it didn't work for a while. Spent several hours taking the peacock fuel shut off apart to clean, the carb apart to clean, cleaned up fuel tank, going through hoses and checking clips and doodad's, and whatnots, and what ya call it's, and thing am a jigs. And putting it all back together. Then I had a fuel leak and had to get the carborator back off to Change a gasket, I couldn't find. When to tsc and found gasket cork sheet and realized I had 3 to change and I fashioned up 3 replacement types that worked out... and got the generator up and running well. To find out I was low on gas, in cans. And stations running out so I'll have to make do with about 10 gal.

I think the essentials are all set. All loose items outside were put up. The hurricane shutters are working. I'm freezing blocks of ice and reducing the on hand perishables. The only struggle is gas. I'm trying to keep the car topped off and the lines are crazy. I did see a nice column in the Orlando paper. It was called something similar to eat well during a hurricane. My attention is now turning into revamping a meal plan.

Many claim that a 100+miles per hour storm is a minor event, lots of garbage talk out there, many have never had their home destroy or suffer a flood so they can talk all day long, many like those fools in the Florida Keys that stay behind are now crying, they fail to prepared and now are blaming everybody else for their foolishness and stupidity, after all it was a minor event according to some right. Events like this bring out the worst and best on all of us, I have witness fighting over a loaf of bread, someone shooting at a pallet of ice, ladies fighting over baby items, and shootings and fighting over gasoline at a station ,yes we humans are a nasty bunch and this was a minor event ,imagine a real event .Now we are going to re-build with the same cheap wood from Home Depot ,we are moving back into brand new mobile homes build with cheap sheet metal and 2 by 2  framing ,wow ,and all under a stupid and ignorant building code .The Caribbean Islands always get the worst of this storms  and the homes build with pour concrete are still standing , Dome homes build with fiberglass or spray concrete are as pretty as ever but our building and city codes still allow yellow pine 2 by 4`s and put together with air tools that shoot thin wire nails . You can buy a 40 foot shipping container for $2000.00 and converted into a home ,set on concrete will not go anywhere but our city codes won`t allowed it; instead cheap trailers and more misery .

People in general do not think to the future, they wait to have someone else take care of them. That's why we prep now, so we don't have to fight for stuff when something bad is going down.
As always there are examples of people doing bad, and some going above and beyond to help.  Heaven help us all if something really serious and long term ever happens. I think the bad will quickly outweigh the good.

I have replaced the supplies I used during the irma event.  I have done a rough inventory of most of my preps and attached it to the bag it's in or the closet there in.  Had a couple of times where I knew I had something in my preps but spent an hour looking for it.  Had plenty of free time during this event but next time ..... time may not be a luxury.

oil lamp (looked new) $1
4 wicks .50 each
a snake bite kit .50
20 gallon and a 30 gallon blue emerg water storage barrel $20 for both (happy dancing!!!!)
Armor all car cleaner (a full bottle) .50

I ran out of time but I may go back tomorrow. I saw a battery charger, some tools and a bucket of emerg food ($45) so there may be some other good finds.

Myakka, good to see you back on line!

As for preps, I've been rotating stock (read that as eating my older canned foods).
Bought an old house for bug out, and eventual retirement living, now spending time working on it.  Need to get a contractor our to see about building a concrete block garage, then block in the existing two car garage to make a prep storage room / vault. Only 14 houses in the "community" of half acre lots, way down a horrible rough once upon a time it was paved road.  Already met 3 of the neighbors in person and heard about a few more. They all claim its a tight nit group of residents all looking out for each other.  So far so good.

I can say right now some of my preps are getting tested in the outdoors. We’re re doing our kitchen baths and tiling floor throughout. That means near everything food wise is in out structures.
I only have mattresses in house at this time. One bathroom and living in one room with four. Interesting in a way. Clothes are baskets and boxes.

I dont post much in this thread, leaning towards opsec.
But im working on canning snap beans, and potatoes, today.
I have took a broken cherry tree down in the back yard about a week ago. I dug up a water line, yesterday so hopefully i can tap into it next week and run a new line.
I grew a 3 week beard i just trimmed today as in a shtf i may not have a razor and its been a while. I checked my generator today, it'll work. I tried fixing a used mower last week for us to use that hadn't run in a while.. it works now.
Alright im done for now wright more later..

I'm just not a beard guy, so I have a lifetime supply of razors and shave soap along with shave soap brushes already stock piled. Each cake of shave soap lasts about 5-6 months of daily use, so at 2 per year, it does not take many to get a long lasting supply.

Went through my entire, completely disorganized, pantry and organized it putting newest in back and oldest in front. Found a couple cans that went bad, leaked, Del Monte fruit cans. Items I dont have to buy for a long time are: Olive oil, salad dressing, BBQ sauce and pickles! Publix BOGO gets me everytime!

Made my first "real" trip to wal-mart in over a month or so.June 1 I cancelled my storage unit and brought it all home. Also cleaned out supplies from work, and my car.Been living/using up all food, water, cleaning supplies,etc..for the last month or so.I did go to taco bell once, and had to get gas and beer a few times.
I'm not prepped to survive 2 years, but try to make sure I can get by at least a few months. So its time to start restocking.Wish I had the patience for couponing, but I don't.I guess I could have saved some money, but its usually brands I don't buy, cheaper to get the store brands at regular price. O0

Had a bug out conversation over the last couple of days with my wife. The recent electrical facility fires made us concerned about grid issues which expanded to any shtf issue short of major emp..  We walked the property and listed what we would want to go if we did need to go to our alternative place. We may be in the market for a small cargo trailer that her minivan could pull and we could pre-load with stuff that we could. It was her idea!

A supporting spouse really helps.

I had a talk a few days ago with a close friend who called and asked about what to put in his bug out bag.  Good for him, as this was the first real discussion we have had on prepping.

I also have a pre-loaded bug out trailer.  a small 5 x 8 enclosed.  it's about half full of the stuff that the summer heat will not hurt.  the preps in the house are boxed up and ready to load out if needed.  My primary plan is to bug-in but if the situation was to favor a bug-out I can load out and be on the road in less than an hour.

Made an appointment to get the van fixed. New brakes squeek and new ac making a lot of noise. Called back the attorney. Dr released me for MMI. Not expecting much. I'll be happy if all the medical bills are paid and I don't have to sift through them all. I'm preparing for a possible job loss. I have a new boss and a new director. Things are not going well. My coworker was just terminated for a "security" violation. When receiving a delivery a stack of boxes fell off the pallet onto a team member. My coworker stepped 5 ish feet from the back door to help him and make sure he wasn't hurt. The company position is they were told of the violation because the landscaper complained. "security" standards are important for the safety of the team. She was with the company for 19 years. I'm considering opening an online store or trying my luck at fairs or craft shows. I found some beads and jewelry supplies on sale so I picked some up.  don't usually sell what I make. I give them away as gifts so we'll see how it goes. I have a lot to learn and need to build a stash of supplies.

Wow,sounds like you got a full plate to deal with!
Job/income issues are a huge mental strain, add medical, and then vehicle..it can become easily overwhelming.

Dab,good job on the first aid kits.
I'm no EMT,but have some knowledge. Most of my meds are at home or work,so climate controlled.
The car is another matter, don't keep many there.
The things in the car that get affected by heat are gloves, and adhesive bandages and tape.
Used to have a pretty extensive "trauma" pack when I worked construction.Often we were in remote locations.Always the possibility of major cuts,falls,heatstroke.lightening/electrical shock.
I carried liquid and pill benadryl for insect bites/stings,and wasp spray..tylonel got used monday mornings, asprin with caffine was handy.Alway had a cooler with ice and water, also powderd electolytes.
The most common things I used was tweezers/needle and neosporine for splinters..eyewash and visine/murine for stuff in the eye.
Thank goodness never had to use tourniqet/isreali bandage.
Did have a few nail thru a hand/finger,and a few bad cuts.
Worst was heatstroke, strpped him and put in the car with ac,ice on neck and groin, called 911 as he was becoming incoherant/unresponsive..By the time they arrived,he had mainly recoverd, they took vitals,he declined transport. O0

I'm still hanging in there Cook. I only cracked once when the pressure was on and that situation can't happen again. Life found more room on the plate LOL. Dealership is telling me brakes that squeek when you use them are normal. The loud noise from the air conditioner was a few leaves then it was a $240 fan blower? No thank you. It's blowing cold air for now so I can shop around. Next up was 2 tires were in the red. All they had was General or Dunlap to choose. I don't have experience with them but I'm told they are not quiet tires. I ended up ordering Michelin Defenders. The dealership wanted too much. They will be in stock at another local shop so I hope to get them put on tomorrow. I hope I picked out a good shop and good tires. I didn't have time to research. Of note while I was waiting I overheard a conversation with another person. They had a dead battery. Seemed to be a simple thing to fix but the dealership didn't have any batteries that fit and they can't get them. The dealership put them in a rental.

Both of my chest freezers and one of my hot water heaters went out. I cleaned out the freezers (yuk!!!) I suspect some of the outlets in the garage are not working. I couldn't find a tripped breaker though. No Hot water makes cleaning and laundry a bit more of a challenge. I'll have to deal with that next week or so. My other car wouldn't start. I don't drive it much. I put the charger on the battery but it keeps triggering the car alarm. I gave up for now and switched gears. I made some soup, red beans, cornbread and vegetable stock. Enjoyed some for now and put the rest in a freezer for another day. The icing on the cake??? My attorney is leaving the firm. He have over 30 yrs exp. Now a have a newbie right out of school. :(

I think I need to do a quality control check in the liquor cabinet.

I gave my son a youth compound bow for Christmas, then bought a used one for myself so we can shoot together.
That's Pretty cool. I hope he enjoys it .. was going to get my kid a Single shot 243 but my kid isnt interested and the wife dont approve apparently cause my wife thinks it's a Waste of money cause the rifle will sit or I'd use more.
So I got "shot down" on the idea.
So I'm pleased to hear your kid gets a bow, you chose to pick out
Same idea different results.. happy for yall

That's cool, I want one too! Always wanted a lever 22, and magnum would make it even better

I guess this counts as prepping:  a friend at work came and asked my opinion about long term food storage - what to look for taste, brands and such. Said his wife is pushing him to get prepared, and she's hearing it from her friends.  Looks like prepperism may be on the rise again.
