I say a device modified in some way would be okay. But if you could afford the real deal even better. Ive used night vision before, better the enemy dont know your using it...
  But maybe someone here will try this and let us know the results. .

I bought this older spy toy at a fleamarket for $5. Not expecting much, I was amazed how well it works! It will illuminate out to 75'

I got one of those "toy" ones like Toxoph's for my son.  Seriously - it worked as well as my much more expensive bottom of the line unit.  I was amazed.
