: Rechargeable Battery Plans
: kalos72 September 28, 2012, 11:14:26 AM
So this is another plan we have been talking about in the kalos home...

Determine what are the primary battery operated devices we want to keep active, then how many batteries they will take(Using the AA converters) and then double/triple that count for storage.

Then we need a good stable charger or three for backups.

Then determine the solar needs of that system and purchase it as well.

Suggestions?

Look into the goal zero stuff. Excellent stuff. Best part is if you can find it cheaper even on the net the company owner will beat the price. Company has a cool back story too.

We bought the small Goal Zero-150 a few months back nd have used it a couple of times- it works really well. Especially when we used our small battery chrger (Duracell). It seems to have recharged 4-AA and 2-C cells with power to spare. The batterys were used in flashlights here at home.
We also have 3 small multi cell solar chargers which do pretty good also for th smaller batts. :)

Yeah, I concur... The Goal Zero stuff is great.  I have the Guide 10 Adventure Series.  It comes with the solar panels, four AA batteries, and a charging unit for the batteries.  It will also directly charge a cell phone or most 12 volt devices.  And it's only about 90 bucks on Amazon.

I'm good on AA and AAA batteries, but I have three or four electric lanterns, several flashlights, and some battery powered fans that all take D cells.  My next step in battery power is rechargeable D cells.

I like that idea...thanks.

I wonder how the goal zero batteries compare tothe sanyo ones...

I can't tell you.  Honestly, mine came with four AA batteries, but I haven't used them.  Most of the rechargeable AA's I have are Energizers, so I just use them since they're the oldest.  If I remember correctly, the specs for the Goal Zero batteries are identical to the Energizers.  1100 mAH @ 1.2 volts if I am not mistaken.

A little out of my price range, but power and shade, sounds good to me.

This is a good idea honestly...the only thing I dont like is the fact you can only use one charger on the system it appears.

>>gravedigging alert<<

I bought a bunch of Home Depot solar post lights years ago.  I did test a couple to see how they perform long term but most are still in their boxes.

I didn't buy them for lighting.  Each comes with 2 AA rechargeable batteries and a little solar cell.  Leave one out in the sun and it charges in a day.  I bought them as battery chargers.  The rechargeables don't last long but power a small LED lantern (bought a gob of them too 5$ each).

Ones like I bought are still available from HomeDep or Lowes etc for 10$ each-

Just make sure they have removeable AA batteries.

I picked up a small solar panel for charging 12v @ Northern Tool on sale for $17.99 plus I had a 10% off coupon.  I stuck it in my gun safe to protect it from an EMP event.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to grab a couple of those.  I would suggest, however, that you spend a little time making up voltage adapters for them so you can charge USB devices as well as 12 volt items.  Better to get them ready now when you don't need them than to try and do it after the fact.  I am working on ways to charge a variety of devices, from iPods (5 volt USB), to rechargeable AA and D cells (12 volt charger) to laptop batteries (19 - 30 volt charger).  I'm making up jumper wires and rigging up voltage transformers to handle the different requirements.  It's all trial and error, since I don't really know what I'm doing.

We have a couple of the harbor freight brand solar panels that are in the van we use for camping. I also keep a small supply of rechargeable solar batteries and the portable charger around the house. Now that the sun is shining more I will be able to get all flash lights and things charged up for the summer months.
