I was reading another survival site, and came across a story about sewing. Not just fixing a missing button, but many more aspects of sewing garments. I need to get my wife to put together a "real sewing kit", not the one needle and some black thread in my bug out bag.
What other areas have you thought of that, maybe, I have not.
Any ideas.

Kodiac i would be interested in the items your wife puts together in a serious sewing kit... this is also one of my concerns..
one thing i recently figured out that i needed was a good pair of clippers, tweezers and fine tooth come kinda like a dogs flea comb and nail files.. (not dollar store stuff) iv been reading alot about the hazards of bad personal hygiene lately.
-
I have been dabling in this, more so for repairing packs. Heavy Duty needles, different types of thread, this is something everyone is going to need.
-
Kodiak--
you inspired me to put together a download and I just uploaded it to the site. I figured I might be of some help in this area since I've been addicted to sewing/quilting for about 35 years.

Thanks, I hope we can all continue to work and learn and prepare together.
New ideas can help us all.
Keep them coming.

I'm still worried about toilet paper. When that is gone, civilization is done.

Now that's a picture.

I know, right? That corn cob stuff sounds very uncomfy! I've been saving old phonebooks, dictionaries, etc. :D Someone had a good tip on storing tp--take out the center cardboard roll to save some room.

I'm still trying to visualize the flexibility and agility that would be required for a human to do that :-\ I think that rules both of us out, Kodiak!
And with my luck I'd be dragging my hiney over poison oak. :o

kleenex... kleenex.... lots of kleenex... even some with alo now so you can have that soft smooth feeling... :P
-
Not completely getting away from the TP topic...... I have stocked up on a few tubes of Prep. H and also the wipes. Diets will be changing during the PAW time and intestinal systems are going to be all screwed up with both constipation AND diarrheal issues.

in talking to my aunt she said knots. practice all kinds in every thing. grass, weeds, soft branches, cloth, ropes, whatever you can get your hands on. she said it just might save your life.
then whatever you tied, see how much weight it can hold and what you can use it for. if you get stuck on your own without the things you need you will already have that skill.
-
Talking about TP. Big leaves are useful (once or twice. Maybe a once a month) but they suck long term.
Maybe extra strings and a guitar.
A wide brim hat. 550 cord. Wool socks and cotton socks.
If ya want to sew leather ya need leather type tools. A regular needle will break.
-
Oak bark boiled in water make a primitive leather tanning agent.
-
There is also a site that has smooth little animated videos of knot tying: http://www.animatedknots.com/
Another site with info on knots is http://www.igkt.net/
For survival medicine: http://www.doomandbloom.net/ These guys have web broadcasts, youtube videos, and do seminars
He is a retired Doctor, and she is a Nurse. They have REAL credentials and teach a lot of survival medicine.

Hey Kaji man, thought animal brains did that too. And also a liberal amount of "piss".
-
I think smoking the hide for a weeks does the job. Feel free to call me on that, though.
-
I think you put the hide in animal brains and water. Then, smoked for color and consistency...
-
Bought one of these awhile back.We all have leather goods and such that need the Heavy Duty Needles and such.. Deluxe Stitcher Kit

Don't know if mentioned but qtips for ears n guns, oil for guns need a bit of stock in that for the long term, anti fouling cleaner and wipes as well are going to be needed. Plus who doesn't like the smell of hoppes in the morning?

I thought that was just me. I mix that with coffee. (Smell only)
-
Extra oil lamp wicks,
-
Tire plug kit, otherwise, 2 flat tires and your done. A small air pump goes hand-in-hand with plugs.
Speaking of plugs, ear plugs. Not just for guns but to sleep. Camping a lot with boy scouts, I could never get to sleep with others snoring nearby, though granted, in a PAW, you may want to be wakened by sounds but every now and then, you need sleep to function.
-
Make sure to include a small pair of good scissors. Almost everything in my bag is sealed in plastic. Shoving a knife through an MRE bag is a good way to poke holes in yourself. A simple pair of scissors is a lot safer.
-
Hand soap or sanitizer is another
-
Super glue, tape, marking Ribbon, icy hot, antiseptic, spare compass, 550 cord
-
Sharpening stones and manual tools

-
If any of yall are nekked, I'll be afraid!!!! :o

If you have horrible eyesight such as myself, extra contacts/solution/eyedrops and also a couple pairs of glasses are essential.
I can't see past 3ft without any type of corrective lens, I think this is my biggest fear for shtf.
That and my migraines.

new product by bell Howell I think is the group. The new product is a pair of glasses you set. They provide a Eye Type Chart. You adjust by dials on the frame till you see better. Its supposed to work for near and far sightedness. You may get a Couple of these for the SHTF, so when your script changes you can kinda keep up. Hopefully they work, you try them, and we get to know more
-
Only concern I would have about adjustables would be, how rugged are they? Being able to adjust for changes in sight would be good long term. I'm considering picking up a pair of two of the old military "BCGs". Problem is those dang hipsters have made them popular. Meaning more expensive. Same thing they did to PBR. I'm developing a real dislike for those little snots.

Well, I never said it didn't have it's advantages ^-^

This sounds interesting, I would be concerned with the integrity of it lasting, but it will definitely be something that I look into more.

??? Disposable Gloves, good for wound care, and eating with dirty hands.
Plans B, C, & D..
Sew Kit, can opener spare, floss for stitching and other things. Fish kit, spare parts, harmonica, deodorant, powder, teeth brush travel travel type and paste, Neosporin, small salt packs, nail clippers, fire starter back-up, trash bags an zipper locks. Extra Ammo...
-
Tin foil, so many uses. With tin foil, you can always cook anything! http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/survivalist/survival-skills-10-uses-aluminum-foil. Charcoal too.
Not all survival situations are TEOTWAWKI, some are short to mid term. One of my jobs relates to emergency preparedness. The most important things I tell people they can do to prepare is video tape everything, inside, outside, collections, serial numbers, everything! store on a couple or more flash drives, keep one safe and give other to a friend/relative not in area. When things get back to normal and insurance claims are an issue, you cant remember everything and the video will be priceless!
Zip ties!! I cant tell you how many times I have used zip ties to repair things on camping trips and around the house. Buy all sizes.
Duct Tape, Obvious I know but the uses for this are vast. I was just at a boy scout camporee and one troop built a boat out of cardboard and duct tape that 2 boys paddled across and back on a lake and the bottom was barely wet!
-
:) how about beads? Trade to local Indians for goods or bribe? India indians I woundnt know about trade to them. ..
Toilet Paper!!!!! More the merrier one would be

Shoelaces, not the cheap white cotton type, but, heavy-duty style. They can be used for securing tarps, etc.
