HOW DO I PREP FOR WOMEN'S MENSTRUAL CYCLES?  :-\

I know a lot of you guys here need to prep for the women in your lives, and sometimes the women in your lives aren't on board with the prepping. I'm willing to bet that you usually want to squeeze your eyes shut, put your fingers in your ears and say, "lalalala" whenever it comes to the topic of women's menstrual cycles. So you may find yourself in uncharted territory when trying to prep for and dealing with women's menstrual cycles in the PAW. (Note: "IIRC" stand for "if I remember correctly.")

Google "menstrual cup." A popular one is the "Diva Cup." It's basically a soft, flexible cup that is inserted into the vagina when one is on her period. You empty it every few hours (IIRC, 8 hours is max), wash it off, and re-insert. When the cycle is over, you wash and boil it and pack it away until the next time it is needed. At Google, you will also see links that show pictures of different kinds of cups as well as how to insert and extract them (they come with detailed instructions on how to use).

I have a Diva Cup, but I have not used it yet (it appears I am doing the early menopause thing) but it is indeed very soft, flexible, and small. A lot of women have sung its praises as far as comfort goes. It seems there is a bit of a learning curve to getting the hang of it, but one can practice insertion and extraction techniques without actually being on one's period (which is difficult and painful to do with tampons).

You can also find reviews of all the many brands of menstrual cups on-line. I have the Diva Cup and I've seen lots of great reviews for it. IIRC, it was about $20 and I ordered it from Amazon (I haven't seen it in Target, but it may be available in drugstores). They come in a couple difference sizes, and it seems the sizing is based on whether one has yet given birth.

So if you have a woman in your life, may eventually have woman in your life, or have daughters or grandaughters you are prepping for, you may want to consider buying some of these in both sizes (remember they will need a bigger size after they have had a baby). I had never heard of these until a couple years ago, so I'm sure there are many other men and women out there who have not yet heard of the idea, either. The women in your life may balk at using a menstrual cup now, but if it comes down to using a cup vs. using scrounged items in the PAW, they will be very glad to have a cup and will make it work.

PROS:

**Much cheaper than tampons or sanitary pads;

**Takes *much* less storage space (flattens out to almost nothing);

**Is better for the environment (less waste);

**Is much more comfortable than making do with moss, scraps, etc., in the PAW;

**Will save resources in a big way in the PAW (cloth, soap to clean the cloth, etc.,);

**Since it is sterilized by boiling, it can be used by more than one woman (but don't count on this; when women live in close proximity their cycles tend to synchronize due to hormones; this has happened to me several times while staying with friends or relatives for a few weeks at a time);

**There could be an advantage over pads in that the blood is "stored" internally vs. being absorbed by sanitary pads (or whatever one can scrounge up in the PAW) as far as trying to remain undetected "scent-wise" by human and animals;

**Since it can be boiled and sterilized, there is much less chance of developing a vaginal infection or irritation of some sort by using whatever one can scrounge in the PAW);

**Would be an excellent barter item (a $20 cup will last for several years; $20 in pads or tampons will last about 3 months);

**Unlike tampons and pads, if a cup gets wet or dirty, it won't be useless;

CONS:

**One could possibly experience an allergy to whatever it is made from (probably very rare; be sure to check what it's made of if there is any question about allergies);

GIB asked a good question: How will this (menstrual cup) increase my survivability profile?

If none of the "pros" mentioned have convinced you, think about how much happier your wife will be with a cup vs. having to scrounge for materials (cloth, moss, etc.), cleaning and boiling and drying cloths, having to carry them around, etc. It's one small, easy, money-saving, space-saving step you can take that will solve a huge problem. She will think you are absolutely brilliant for thinking of this. And if there is less irritation in her head and between her legs (from having to use unsuitable, itchy and irritating materials), you may be the recipient of her...ummm...favors  :D

NOTE:
This is something to keep in mind about menstrual cycles in the PAW. When I first got to Parris Island, SC, for USMC bootcamp, we were told that, due to the physical activity and stress, we might stop having our menstrual cycles. They were right. I was in bootcamp for about 10 weeks and it took a good couple of months for it to return. In the PAW, it will definitely be more stressful and a whole lot more physical labor will be required. Throw in the possibility that food might be scarce, and there will be a whole lot of women who will stop having their periods. Keep that in mind. It may save you a lot of anxiety regarding pregnancy if your wife or 16 year old daughter suddenly stops having her menstrual cycle.  ;)

Is Mr. Prepper thinking that living with a bunch of stressed out, irritated, uncomfortable, and totally synchronized, hormonal, PMS'ing females might not very pleasant?  :-\

I just had a funny thought--in the PAW all the men in the group start finding it necessary to "deploy" somewhere (e.g., for a "foraging" mission). For about a week. Every four weeks.  ^-^

Naw, we'll just reintroduce the time honored Amerind practice of sending the women to a separate out of the way spot during the 'taboo' moon time.

I posted about this a while back, as the Billions household was in the process of testing the products. The post can be found here: http://www.flsurvival.com/index.php?topic=6965.0 (http://www.flsurvival.com/index.php?topic=6965.0). It has been almost two years since switching and the household consensus is that these are viable alternatives for the right women (size-wise) and are definitely worth investigating, even if not prepping. Menstrual cups, unlike tampons, collect the flow rather than absorb the flow, and thus do not pose the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome.

Thank you, Billions! I was looking for a particular thread on this subject--I thought it was out there--maybe it was the subject line that threw me  :D

For everyone who is interested, Billions posted a great review at the link (much better and informative than mine).

Haha, yeah, I tried to be non-descript with the title, but perhaps being more forward would have been easier and less of an assault to those who wandered in without knowing what TOM meant. I realized that two others posted about the product before I did, but no one had reviewed it, so thought maybe the Billions household finally could contribute to the Encyclopedia FLS. It has been almost 2 years since the switch and there hasn't been any request to go back, so it definitely is doable in non-PAW living.

At any rate, awareness and discussion help people consider options, so it is good to bring it up every so often, especially with so many joining the forum. Besides, it reminds me to stop lurking and post updates/new information on my own posts, if necessary.  8)

I guess this is why bildo decided to move it from general discussion to lioness den. I have no earthly idea why someone would think this is not "general discussion." I'll tell you what I told bildo:

moved to lioness den.

What is the purpose of the lioness den? Is it a place for women to talk or is it a dumping ground for female-related subjects that make men uncomfortable?

The majority of preppers (and preppers on this site) are men. Men who are trying to prepare their families. This is a subject that a lot of men haven't even thought about. And if they have thought about it, chances are they don't know about stuff like this (menstrual cups) and are going to spend a lot of money and devote a lot of space to a mountain of tampons and pads.

I hope you will reconsider and move it back where it was. How many men are going to venture into the "lioness den"?

Thanks, Siege

Case in point: Sgt. Prepper: "Shouldn't this go in the Lioness Den so I don't have to read it!?"

The men on this site need to read this so they know how to prep for this issue. How many guys here haven't even begun to *think* about this issue? All the women on this site already know about it. From some of the comments I've read, it's not even on some guys' radar. It's one thing to not have thought about it--it's another thing entirely to just not care.

Siege,  i think you have a point that dealing with the sanitation issue of this will be a survival problem.   We are on top of it at my house.  I just gave you the EWE! Because it DOES make us men so uncomfortable it makes me laugh.
You probably have a bigger point too that if I am the lead prepper for my house, I need to think of EVERYONE's needs.  This could apply to any family member who needs meds or special care.

I don't mind the "ewww" remarks, etc. I think it's rather humorous. It's the following line by Sgt Prepper: "Shouldn't this go in the Lioness Den so I don't have to read it!?" which, while also humorous, supports my point that putting this information in the "lioness den" means it will likely be overlooked by men who are trying to prep for their wives and daughters.

To everyone:
And actually, I am somewhat offended, not by all the "ewww!" remarks but by the idea that some (like bildo and sentry) think that this topic doesn't belong in general discussion because it has to do with women. If you're the kind of guy who thinks this topic doesn't belong in general discussion because it's something you don't want to have to think about, you're exactly the kind of guy who needs this information.

If you're the kind of guy who thinks that your wife and daughters can just "make do" with whatever cloth they happen to find (and the resulting infections), then you're ignorant and not looking out for the best interest of the women in your life.

i missed where this topic was posted originally.  it should have been moved sooner.  my bad.  it is in Lioness Den because it is a topic that has to do with women.  it is doubtful anyone would have missed this topic as the lioness den is not a chosen board like politics.

going off logic suggested i should eliminate all boards and put all topics under general discussion.  since everything posted here can apply to everyone.

instead of doing that i chose to move this topic to the lioness den.  we have a category it fits under.

eeeeeeeeeeewwwwww??????????????
imagine how we feel, we are the one's who have to deal with it!

i'm glad this came up because I just learned that in the olden days and still in many cultures including my own :o our flows are caught on rags, the rags soaked in small amounts of water then later washed and hung out to dry. but what is shocking to me is what is done to the water!

the water is added to the garden to be like a fert. researching further, it brings beneficial things to the soil and helps decompose compost. so the ew is now a wow for me and something I will try. will try it on the weeds b4 I try it on my veggies though.
