I recently obtained a Remington 700 with a 20" bbl 308 cal
I'm learning about terms in reference to the Rifle, and looking for a well rounded scope to mount to it.
-
Sentry at this point in time any 308 ammo you can get your hands on. I have a Savage heavy Bbl. in 308 and Federal Gold Medal 308 168 gain Sierra matchking BTHP shoots fine with 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds. My glass is a NIKON Buckmaster with BDC reticle. Lucky Gunner has 308 ammo in stock., but at a very high price. If you have an accurate rifle, good glass and a one piece mount you have a set up which is more accurate than most of can hold on target. Good luck !!
-
Not entirely concerned about ammo at the moment... Looking for scope information...
Im just wanting to put a well rounded scope on it
Here is what I have learned so far...
I know I have a Heavy Barrel on it...
AAC = Advanced Armorment Corporation (Sound Suppressor manufacturer) Rifle is threaded for their stuff, its all about options.
ADL/ BDL - ADL is no floor plate,, BDL is it has a floor plate. Mine does.
BBC/ BDM - ? No definitave answer as of yet
There is a drop in mag base I can get....
-
https://www.americanprecisionarms.com/products-page/triggerguards/redesigned-trigger-guard-rtg-sa-rtg-sa/
I'm liking this DBM (Detachable Box Magazine) System, the seamless trigger guard and ease of releasing the mag...
http://youtu.be/-n_hufqembs
$275 is not horrible for the box mag option... Will have to wait and see, will also have to find mags... Probably expensive as hell....
-
Sentry my first post to your question I mistakenly read that you were looking for Ammo. After rereading I realized you are looking for a rifle scope. I'm a Nikon person having the Nikon Buckmaster BDC on my 308 and a similar model on my AR15. Both are good in low light situations. The BDC (Bullet Drop Center) compensates for bullet drop I believe out to 600 yards. Just zero in at 100 yards and align the circles for other yardages. A good source is Digital Oasis . They are on- line and located in Florida. When I purchased my Buckmaster scope they beat all other prices. Watch out for copies (knock-offs) on scopes.
-
While I did start this thread out as a just looking for scopes. I have also found there are a lot of terms out there for things I may want to do to this rifle.
I purchased it because of the length of the barrel (fits in safe), but also because it has a threaded barrel. The SPS is lighter than older models of Rem 700, that was with my wife in mind. She wants to hunt to...
They kept mentioning Hunting pigs at the shop.. Whats that about?
-
Wild pigs are a nuisence animal so you can shoot them with no permit any time year round (with the landowners permission). Very popular with hunters. They are about all I hunt anymore. It is way easier to get permission for pigs around here. Not much public land, and families do NOT let you in to hunt deer and turkey unless you're kin......
So I guess they were excited about hoghunting.....
-
Pig hunts are a blast. Trigger gaurd mag well is pretty neat. As far as scopes Leupold optics are nice.
-
Any good glass will do fine, Just keep it simple.
Good glass , throw a Harris bi-pod on it , a good flash suppressor and a good leather 2 point sling.
Im betting you already know the rest. ;)
-
naive has a good point i use a simmions 9x44 on my 06 that i got at walmart in NC and it works very well... altho i do like the vortex series of optics lately...
-
Yup, Keep it simple. Glass can be the most expensive part of the rifle. By the way I'm reading your post I want to say you bought a Remington 700 SPS Tactical ACC, am I right? Remington doesn't make many 20" heavy threaded barrel combos. You do get what you pay for when it comes to glass however then benefits are much smaller the higher you go in price (cost vs return). It comes down to want do you plan on doing with the rifle? And how much do you want to spend? If I got the rifle right its more of a target/precision rifle cause of the way its setup but you can tote in the woods whatever your willing to carry. I have had mixed results with Tasco, simmons, weaver, redfields, and my Leupolds and Burris. I'd be glad to help where I can, but you don't have to pay a lot of money to get a decent scope. But if you go on to certain forums there are a lot of brand snobs. I always suggest getting a good rail and rings and there are a lot of options there. EGW (Evolution Gun Works) has a deal currently on Remington 700 SA rails for $25 you get a "factory second" picatinney. Its a a good deal on good solid base, however it is 0 MOA and unless you are shooting past 600 yards you don't really need it.
http://www.egwguns.com/seconds/remington-700-722-40x-short-action-picatinny-rail-scope-mount-second/
The size scope rings and height will depend on the scope so that would be last.

Superb rifle. The Nikon 3x9 is a really nice mate for it.

This rifle is on Remington's site. Whether they make it or not I don't know..
If I understand things right this is short action right?
-
700 SPS Tac......one of the best for the money.
Yes it is a short action.
Mine does 1/2 MOA at 100 yards with fed match ammo!
-
Here is the link to the Rifle
http://www.remington.com/en/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-sps-tactical-aac-sd.aspx
While mine does not have the suppressor, this is the one I have.
So, as of right now... I guess I am looking at mounts for the rings... Start from the bottom up I suppose.
I'm wondering, if I should go with a full length rail? A two piece rail? Should I get the 20 M.O.A.? Obviously, this will not be something I can change out easily or quickly...
A 0 M.O.A. mount is good up to 600 meters, where as a 20 M.O.A. rail is good for 600-1000 meters... Will I shoot that far? I don't know. Suppose I can answer my own question here.... I'm not that good of a shot with something I have not even fired yet... SO, 0 M.O.A. it is...
Now its about the one piece or two piece...

Yeah, I'm thinking a lot of 168 grn is in my future somehow.

I am leaning toward Leupold Scopes more, because I have heard good things about them holding zeros better...
I would like to get a Nightforce... But I don't have the money I used to...
-
I have a scope. Its also a Nikon Buckmaster BDC. Very good scope, I got it at Gander. The other option I thought of gettin was a Coyote scope.
-
Ok, so I have been looking at Calibrated scopes, thinking this is a good way to go...
This video helped me understand a couple of things a little better... So Ill post it

Your first video, I had to stop cause he started talking out his a$$. He obviously didn't know what he was talking about. Second video was more sound, I hate listening to instructional videos though. Very mono tone.
-
I didn't actually listen to the whole first one. That scope is more than I'll be able get anyway. There were a couple things in there that answered questions for me...
Second one I think there is more useful info of course...

Honesly though... I am still learning about the rifle itself... The only thing I know about scopes, is there are some that are calibrated to the caliber... So far I have not found that to be true with bolt actions...
But there is a scope calibrated for the 308 AR style.
You can get knobs calibrated for your scope matched to the rifle for a couple hundred dollars... Still figuring that one out.
Im still picking a scope, I have to get mount first...

Dont over-think it.

All comes down to $$$$$$$$$$$

All Remingtons .308 rifles are short actions as far as I know unlike Winchester and some others. Many new 700s now come with adjustable triggers. The .308 fires most rounds at over two times the speed of sound closer to three which is 1080 FPS at sea level so it is a little harder to silence since the bullet breaks the sound barrier and can creat a crack on its own. Work on the scope first and the removable mag much later. Bass Pro and many other stores carry Leupold bases the one piece is better I think. You can remove your scope and return it to near zero with ease. I have been using them for fourty years and have no problems. You can easely spend more on a scope then you do on a rifle but to start out get a good scope a a reasonal price. Academy Sports in Pensacola has all there scopes mounted on faux rifles and something like that will let you know what feels good for you. Just a suggestion but stay with a 1" and maybe a 40 MM objective to gather light. A 3 x 9 is the most common scope on the market now and there are dozens to chose from. I have $1000 scopes and $100 dollar scopes and for general use try something simple, remember (KISS) Keep It Simple Stupid. The more bells and wistles the more chances of screwing things up. I was at Academy Sports and tried out several last week and was supprised that the one I liked best was a Banner, a Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 6-18x50 Riflescope. I'm going to order one for my 17 HMR. I have a couple CenterPoints from Wally World and love them. At about $69 dollars they are pretty darn good scopes. Good luck and I hope I might have helped a little.

While it is true that the bullet will still make a sonic crack, the biggest advantages of a suppressor on a supersonic cartridge are the elimination of muzzle flash, reduction or elimination of debris stirred up, reduction or elimination of gas expansion (the major bang of the round going off), and reduction or elimination of recoil. Even the supersonic crack of the round passing a listener will sound like it is coming from a direction of 90 degrees from the bullets line of travel, due to the listener hearing the sonic boom from whichever side the bullet passes them on. This is why the military spent so much money having Barrett develop a suppressor for their .50 BMG rifles.

Banner, a Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 6-18x50 Riflescope is what I put on my 700 w/28" 1 in 12 barrel. .223 cal. Bought it a week before Christmas, have not been out to the farm to shoot it yet. Bass Pro mounted the scope set for 100 yards.
-
Yeah, I figured I wanted to get it to the point of being able to shoot accurately first...
I do want the 6 inch bi pod, and is the cheapest thing I can get first.. This will help with aligning rifle itself... Then the butt stock check rest, then Ill probably pick up scope wally world had for like 249, it was a luepold...
I also wanted to say, you guys helped out quite a bit, thank you.. Just waiting on money to balance out as of late...

Are you able to take a pic of your reticle... Just so happens I found this exact scope on ebay for what seems to be a decent price.

Thinking I am going with this base/ mount
http://swfa.com/DNZ-Lightweight-1-Scopemount-P41506.aspx
Its for the Remington 700 and is a medium height.
-
Oh yea, forgot to mention... Since this is an informational thread as well.
There are a few things when it comes to bases/ mounts.
There are a couple heights in mounts
Low - For scopes with upto 32mm lenses
Medium - For scopes with upto 42mm lenses
High - For scopes with 40-56mm lenses

My only advice would of course come too late. Don't go cheap on rifle glass. If the axiom that the chain is only as strong as the weakest link is true, then putting a cheap scope on your rifle would be a bad thing. It lowers the performance quality to the whole system. Nikons aren't bad scopes, but the Leupold is ten times better, IMHO. Good luck, and let us know how it shoots!

This link should bring you to selecting Nikon Turret Knobs which are calibrated for your specific round of choice. and dependent on the scope you chose, if you chose a Nikon....

I'll chime in even though it is an old post.
I have 2 Remington 700 sps one in 338 lapua and one in 308. On both I have a Nikon 4x16x 50mm tactical scope. Works great. Shoot 1.5 moa groups at 300m. Can pit them even closer if I really bed down. My 308 is 16" and 338 20"
Both have Archangel chassis. Its pretty much like shooting same gun when switch from one to other.
My first advise would be to change out your chassis
Then get optics
The factory chassis it comes on isn't bad if I'm not wrong its a houge over molded. You need something with aluminum or glass bedding to really put the gun to work and increase accuracy by a decent margin.
